Has anyone else seen the Regents Park’s production of “Into the Woods”
What did you think?
I posted some thoughts on it when I first watched it here and here. It was, however, a while ago so my feelings may change if I were to watch it again now.
Interesting. I like what you have to say on another thing.
As far as the ending goes with “On the Steps of the Palace” is concerned, it actually makes a lot more sense to tie those three songs in at the end of it, because they all are the same song (as far as the character development goes) with the exact same melodic harmonic motifs. Sondheim actually at one time considered making all three of those (well, four if you count the Baker’s wife’s song in the second act) as one song with each song after “I Know Things Now” being reprisals of whatever the original song was. I think that’s why Sondheim re-wrote it. However, the Regents Park production didn’t do a good job of it musically. The harmonies and counterpoint at the end weren’t quite right, which didn’t tie it together all that well. Why it was that way, I don’t know. Those songs, and their relation to one another, are discussed in great detail in the book “Sondheim’s Broadway Musicals” by Stephen Banfield. If you haven’t read it yet, it has a lot of good insight.
